Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Routs Eastern Mennonite, 72-43, In Season-Opener Saturday

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) shot nearly 50 percent from the field on its way to a convincing 72-43 victory over Eastern Mennonite University (0-1, 0-1 ODAC)

How It Happened
- After a scoreless opening three minutes, the Wasps got on the board with eight straight points. EMU finished the first period by outscoring E&H, 9-6, to make the margin 14-9 through 10 minutes of play.
- Emory & Henry used an 11-4 run to extend the advantage to 25-13 with 5:23 to go before the break. The squads traded baskets late in the quarter for a 31-19 E&H lead at the break.
- The Wasps scored 13 of the first 17 points of the second half on their way to a 44-23 lead. Down by 21 (48-27), the Royals scored the final five points of the period to close the gap to 48-32 through three.
- E&H opened the fourth on a 9-2 run to go up by 23 (57-34). Eastern Mennonite got within 18 with 4:11 to play but Emory & Henry closed the game on a 13-2 run for the final 72-43 margin.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman Taylor Owens (Bristol, Tenn.) led all players in her collegiate debut with 13 points off the bench while junior Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) put together a double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
- Senior guard Kylea Cooper (Hickory, N.C.) posted 10 points, five assists and four rebounds while senior guard Josie Salyer (Mount Carmel, Tenn.) added seven points.
- Freshman forward Brianna Hogan (Front Royal, Va.) notched six points and nine rebounds while junior guard Taylor Gilbert (Abingdon, Va.) had six points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Eastern Mennonite Individual Leaders
- Constance Komara and Mya Wright tied for the team lead with nine points off the bench as Komara added seven rebounds.
- Vanessa Gardiner has eight points and five steals while Emily McCombs tacked on seven points.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 49.2 percent (31-for-63) from the field with five three-pointers. The Wasps hit five-of-seven (71-4%) of their free throws.
- Eastern Mennonite was cold from the field, going just 13-for-69 (18.8%) with four makes from long range. The Royals made the best of their free throw opportunities, shooting 72.2 percent (13-for-18) at the line.
- E&H held a 56-33 rebounding advantage, but EMU's 14 offensive boards translated to a 13-6 lead on second-chance points.
- The Wasps dominated down low, with a 44-14 lead on points in the paint and posted 19 assists to the Royals' six.
