Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Defeats Mary Baldwin, 62-52, Monday Evening

STAUNTON, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (4-6) snapped a five-game skid on Monday evening with a 62-52 win at Mary Baldwin University (5-5). The Wasps never trailed in the contest as three players reached double figures in scoring.

How It Happened
- E&H got out to a 7-2 lead just 1:16 into the contest, pushing the margin to 14-6 with 3:14 on the clock. The Wasps held a 17-10 advantage through one period of play.
- An 11-1 run by Emory & Henry to open the second made it a 28-11 contest but MBU closed the gap to 14 (36-22) at the intermission.
- Coming out of the break, E&H scored the first eight points to go ahead by 22 (44-22) with 5:49 in the third. Seven straight by the Fighting Squirrels set up a larger 11-5 run which trimmed the deficit to 47-33 with one quarter to play.
-  The Wasps started the final frame with a 6-1 run to extend their lead back to 19 with 4:57 left. Ten in a row by Mary Baldwin got things to within nine (53-44) but Emory & Henry staved off the rally in the final minutes to come away with the 62-52 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Junior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) had a team-high 14 points, adding four steals two assists and two rebounds while senior center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) notched 11 points and four boards.
- Freshman forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) had a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and two assists while junior guard Claudia Frost (Damascus, Va.) notched nine points and four boards off the bench.

Mary Baldwin Individual Leaders
- Jalen Gathers led all players with 20 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals as Hannah Varner collected 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks.
- Jacqmea Britt scored eight points off the bench for the Fighting Squirrels.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 19-for-54 (35.2%) for the game with eight three-pointers. The Wasps made 69.6 percent (16-of-23) of their free throws.
- Mary Baldwin hit just 23.0 percent (14-of-61) of their shots with four makes from long range. The Squirrels scored 20 points (20-for-32) at the stripe.
- E&H held a 51-41 rebounding advantage edged MBU 17-15 on points off turnovers and 7-4 on second-chance points.

- Emory & Henry closes out the fall portion of its season on Wednesday when it hosts Alice Lloyd College at 1:00 p.m. The contest will serve as the Wasps' inaugural Education Day.
