Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Holds Off Milligan, 73-69, Sunday Evening

MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (5-7) got 2022 off to a good start as it picked up a 73-69 win over Milligan University (8-6) Sunday on the road. It was the first game in nearly three weeks for the Wasps, who have now won two of their last three contests.

How It Happened
- The Buffaloes jumped out to a 7-0 lead 1:50 into the contest but the Wasps bounced back to tie things at 11-11. Milligan would lead, 13-11, through one period.
- Back-to-back baskets to start the second by MU pushed the margin back to six (17-11). E&H kept things close answering with a 9-3 run to knot the score, 20-20, with 6:49 on the clock. The Wasps got their first lead of the game at 29-28 as the teams went into the locker room in a dead heat, 35-35.
- Coming out of the break, Milligan scored six in a row to go up, 41-35. Trailing, 46-41, Emory & Henry finished the third on a 13-5 run to lead 54-51 with 10 minutes to play.
- In the fourth period, the Buffs tied things up, 58-58, with 7:03 but a 9-2 run by the Wasps gave them their largest advantage of the night, 67-60. Milligan ran off nine in a row to lead 69-67 with 1:40 left to play but Emory & Henry came through in the clutch scoring the final six points of the game for the 73-69 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) led all players with 22 points, going 11-for-19 from the field with four rebounds while junior guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) had 12 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals, going 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
- Sophomore guard Taylor Owens (Bristol, Tenn.) had 10 points and three rebounds off the bench while senior center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) went for nine points and three rebounds.

Milligan Individual Leaders
- Jaycie Jenkins scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Milligan while Halie Padgett went for 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
- Lauren Longmire posted 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals as Kayla Romines tallied 11 points and three assists.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 29-for-66 (43.9%) for the game with four three-pointers. The Wasps converted 11-of-16 (68.8%) of their free throws.
- Milligan hit 41.5 percent (27-for-65) of its shots with seven makes from beyond the arc. The Buffaloes were 8-for-9 (88.9%) at the stripe.
- MU posted a 42-36 rebounding advantage and led, 16-8, on second-chance points.
- E&H put up a 42-32 margin on points in the paint and made the most of 19 Milligan errors to lead 34-15 on points off turnovers.
