Salem Women’s Basketball Pulls Away From Emory & Henry, 77-68, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Salem (W.Va.) University Women's Basketball Team (4-8) shot 55.6 percent in the fourth period as it pulled away to defeat Emory & Henry College (7-8) by a 77-68 score Saturday afternoon in a matchup between a pair of NCAA Division II Independents.

How It Happened
- The two teams went back and forth early in the contest with two ties and seven lead changes in the first eight minutes alone. Down 15-13, Emory & Henry scored eight in a row to close the period for a 21-15 advantage.
- Salem started the second with eight straight points to go up 23-21 but E&H answered with a 12-5 run to lead, 33-28, with 3:36 on the clock. Four more lead changes before the break saw the Wasps take a 39-36 margin into the locker room.
- Returning to play, the Tigers were able to build a 50-45 lead at the 2:56 mark of the third period. Emory & Henry trimmed the deficit to one on two different occasions but Salem carried a 56-52 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
- After the Wasps trimmed the score to 56-54 on the opening basket of the fourth, the Tigers scored eight in a row to go ahead by 10 with 7:20 left to play. Six in a row by Salem later in the quarter made the largest margin of the afternoon, 75-61, as it held on for the 77-68 victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists while senior center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) put up a double-double with 13 points and 18 boards.
- Freshman guard Macy McClellan (Kingsport, Tenn.) went for 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists as junior guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) notched nine points, six rebounds three assists, and three steals.
- Freshman guard Taylor Pace (Greenville, S.C.) added eight points, six rebounds and two steals.

Salem (W.Va.) Individual Leaders
- Nerea Arambarri Fernandez led all players with 27 points, and went for 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Liliani Krause put up a double-double as well with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Allysa McRae had 10 points off the bench.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 34.8 percent (23-for-66) from the field with five three-pointers. The Wasps made 17-of-25 (68.0%) of their free throws.
- Salem hit 30-of-68 (34.9%) of its shots with 11 makes from long range. The Tigers shot just 42.9 percent (6-for-14) at the stripe.
- E&H held a 58-47 rebounding advantage and edged SU, 17-15, on second-chance points.
- The Tigers forced the Wasps into 27 turnovers, scoring 37 points on their resulting possessions.
