Carolina Univ. Women’s Basketball Escapes Emory & Henry, 58-55, Friday Evening

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Carolina University Women's Basketball Team (6-8) scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, rallying to defeat Emory & Henry College (8-11) by a 58-55 score Friday.

How It Happened
- Emory & Henry got out to a 10-6 lead at the 6:07 mark of the opening period before Carolina Univ. scored eight in a row for a 14-10 advantage. The Bruins led, 16-12, through the end of the first.
- CU pushed the margin to 26-20 midway through the second but E&H scored six of the final nine points of the half for a 29-26 Bruin lead at the half.
- Coming out of the break, the Wasps scored 13 in a row for a 39-29 advantage. Carolina Univ. responded with a 10-2 run to make it a 41-39 contest with 10 minutes to play.
- A 10-2 run by the Bruins to open the fourth quarter gave them a 49-43 lead with 6:23 on the clock. Emory & Henry responded with a 12-3 run to lead 55-52 with 84 seconds remaining but CU closed with six in a row to come away with the 58-55 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) notched a team-high 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.   
- Senior center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) had 12 points and eight rebounds as junior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) finished with nine points and seven assists.
- Junior guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) and sophomore guard Taylor Owens (Bristol, Tenn.) contributed seven points each.

Carolina Univ. Individual Leaders
- Malayah Montgomery led all players with 24 points, tacking on seven rebounds and two steals  as Denasia Mitchell contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.
- Jonna Roberson scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry made 22-of-54 (40.7%) of its field goal attempts with five three-pointers. The Wasps shot 75 percent (6-of-8) from the free throw line.
- Carolina Univ. shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the floor with a pair of makes from long range. The Bruins went 10-for-22 (45.5%) from the charity stripe.
- E&H led 32-28 on rebounding but CU posted a 34-28 margin on points in the paint.

Up Next
- Emory & Henry will host Warren Wilson College on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The contest will be the second game of a doubleheader with the E&H men.
