Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Downs Carolina Univ., 71-54, On Senior Day Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (13-12) concluded the 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon with a 71-54 win over Carolina University (8-10) Saturday afternoon. The contest also served as Senior Day for the Wasps, who honored Claudia Frost (Damascus, Va.), Callie Haderer (Bristol, Va.) and Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) prior to tipoff.

How It Happened
- The Bruins got out to a 9-5 lead at the 3:59 mark of the opening period but the Wasps closed the gap to 13-12 through 10 minutes of play. In the second, an early 11-2 run by E&H made it a 23-16 contest as it pushed the score to 35-29 at the half.
- Emory & Henry came out of the locker room on a 15-4 run to lead by 14 (50-36) with 1:40 left in the third and held a 52-39 advantage with one period remaining.
- In the fourth, a 15-2 run by the Wasps gave them a 71-45 lead with 2:30 to go. E&H went to its bench in the final minutes as it cruised to the 71-54 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Haderer led the Wasps with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists while freshman forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) went for 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench.
- Junior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) posted 10 points and five rebounds as freshman guard Macy McClellan (Kingsport, Tenn.) tallied 10 points.  

Carolina Univ. Individual Leaders
- Malaya Montgomery scored 16 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and four assists while Ni'Jaa Wells tallied 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.
- Genasia Everett and Denasia Mitchell has 11 and 10 points, respectively with Mitchell leading the team with six rebounds and three assists.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 27-for-55 (49.1%) for the game with nine three-pointers and hit 80 percent (8-of-10) of its free throws.
- Carolina Univ. was just 38.9 percent (21-for-54) from the field with three triples. The Bruins shot 9-for-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line.
- E&H held a 33-29 rebounding advantage and outscored CU 16-7 on second-chance points. The Wasps also led 30-24 on points in the paint and 21-16 on points off turnovers.
