Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Defeats Limestone, 98-87, In SAC Opener Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (3-4, 1-0 SAC) opened the South Atlantic Conference era on Saturday afternoon with a 98-87 home win over Limestone University (3-5, 0-1 SAC). The Saints were picked to finish fifth in the SAC by the league's head coaches prior to the start of the season.

The 98 points scored by the Wasps were the most since they equaled the same total with a 98-64 win against Roanoke College on January 31, 2018.

How It Happened
- The Wasps got out to a 10-4 lead at the 5:37 mark of the opening period and used a 9-1 run later in the quarter to go ahead, 17-7. E&H would lead, 24-16, through 10 minutes of play.
- Early in the second, the two squads battled back and forth with six in a row by Limestone cutting it to a 32-29 contest. Emory & Henry responded however to take a 48-43 advantage into the locker room.
- Returning to action in the third quarter, the Wasps scored 10 of the first 13 points to extend the margin to 58-46 with 7:29 on the clock. Limestone closed the gap to seven (63-56) later in the frame and the two teams traded baskets with E&H holding a 73-65 margin with one period to go.
- In the fourth, Emory & Henry opened on a 10-2 run to press its advantage to 16 (83-67) with 6:55 left. The Saints would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way as the Wasps cruised to their first league win as a SAC school.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) led the Wasps with 19 points, going 6-for-12 from the field and hitting four three-pointers.
- Sophomore forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while senior guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) went for 17 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.
- Sophomore guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) posted four points and four rebounds off the bench while sophomore forward Grace Glance (Clyde, N.C.) added seven points and six rebounds.

Limestone Individual Leaders
- Quin Byrd put up a game-high 20 points and added six steals, four assists and three rebounds while Kalisha Hill notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards.
- Amara Newsom had 12 points and four rebounds off the bench as Reagan McCray tallied 11 points, two assists and two steals.
- Shaniya Caldwell contributed 10 points of her own.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry blistered the nets, shooting 33-for-56 (58.9%) from the field and hitting 10-of-20 (50%) attempts from long range. The Wasps made 78.6 percent (22-of-28) of their free throws.
- Limestone made 45.9 percent (34-of-74) of their shots with seven makes from beyond the arc. The Saints were 12-for-20 (60%) from the stripe.
- E&H held a 37-34 rebounding advantage but Limestone tallied 13 offensive boards which translated to a 15-7 lead on second-chance points.
- The Saints forced 27 Wasp mistakes and led 32-18 on points off turnovers to go along with a 48-38 lead on points in the paint.
