Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Pulls Away From King, 80-61, Behind Strong Second Half

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (4-4) evened its season record as it outscored King (Tenn.) University (2-7) by a 47-25 margin in the second half. The Wasps won the contest by an 80-61 margin.

How It Happened
- The Wasps got out to an 8-2 lead at the 7:46 mark of the opening period before four in a row by the Tornado closed the gap to 8-6. The two squads went back and forth with E&H pressing the lead to 20-13 with 2:29 on the clock before King went ahead 21-20 thanks to eight in a row. The last basket of the period would go Emory & Henry's way for a 22-21 advantage.
- In the second, the two teams traded baskets early with the Wasps holding a 33-30 lead with 3:12 to play before the half. King scored the final six points for a 36-33 margin going into the locker room.
- Returning to action, Emory & Henry scored 13 of the first 17 points to make it a 46-40 contest with 6:24 on the clock. The Tornado cut it to three less than a minute later but the Wasps bounced back, outscoring King 16-8 to take a 62-51 advantage into the final 10 minutes of play.
- King closed the gap to nine (64-55) with 8:28 left in the game but a 9-1 run covering 2:31 gave Emory & Henry a 17-point lead with 5:54 to go as the Wasps cruised to the 80-61 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Sophomore Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) posted a career-high 24 points in her first collegiate start, going 10-for-18 from the field with four three-pointers. She added eight rebounds and two assists.
- Sophomore forward Grace Glance (Clyde, N.C.) went for 16 points and five rebounds off the bench as sophomore forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) tallied 13 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
- Redshirt freshman forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) went for 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks with senior guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) tallying eight points, 10 assists and five rebounds.

King Individual Leaders
- Le'Aije Ellington paced the Tornado with 13 points to go along with six steals and four rebounds while Tori Smiley put up 10 points and two steals off the bench.
- Jaelyn West tallied nine points and seven rebounds with Alexa Gramann and Ashley Allen going for six points apiece.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry made 31-of-59 (52.5%) of its shots including a 52.9 percent (9-for-17) mark from three-point range. The Wasps were an impressive 9-for-10 (90%) from the free throw line.
- King shot just 31.9 percent (23-for-72) for the game with four makes from beyond the arc. The Tornado was just 11-for-20 (55.0%) at the stripe.
- E&H held a 44-36 rebounding advantage but King pulled down 17 offensive boards which it translated into 17 second-chance points.
- The Wasps held a 36-30 lead on points in the paint and a 14-9 margin on fastbreak points.
- Emory & Henry also managed 20 assists on its 31 made field goals (64.5%) compared to just seven helpers for King.

- Emory & Henry will be back in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Lincoln Memorial University at 2:30 p.m.
- The game will also serve as Community Day for the Wasps. All attendees aged 17 and younger will be admitted for free.
