Concord Women’s Basketball Holds Off Emory & Henry Rally, 81-70, Monday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Concord University Women's Basketball Team (4-6) scored 31 points in the opening quarter on its way to an 81-70 non-conference win over Emory & Henry College (5-7) Monday evening.

How It Happened
- E&H scored the opening basket of the contest before seven in a row gave Concord a 7-2 lead. The Wasps bounced back to go ahead 9-7 at the 6:09 mark thanks to a three-pointer by sophomore guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) but a 16-0 run by the Mountain Lions made it 23-9 with 2:28 on the clock. Concord would hold a 31-12 advantage through the opening 10 minutes.
- In the second, the Mountain Lions pushed their advantage to 27 (39-12) at the 8:45 mark with eight-straight points. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period as the Wasps trimmed the margin to 50-29 at the half.
- Emory & Henry opened the third period on an 8-0 run to close the gap to 50-37, but eight in a row by Concord reestablished the 21-point halftime margin. E&H went on an 18-7 run to close the period, highlighted by a 16-2 spurt to stay in contention. The Mountain Lions would hold a 65-55 lead going into the fourth.
- The two squads went back and forth early in the final frame before a 7-2 run by E&H closed the gap to six with 5:20 to play at 72-66. Seven in a row by the visitors pushed the margin to 13 (79-66) with just under three minutes to play as the Mountain Lions held on for the 81-70 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Redshirt freshman forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) posted a game-high 20 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists while senior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) had 12 points, seven boards four assists and two steals.
- Sophomore forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) went for 11 points and six rebounds as sophomore guard Mimi Traynham (Richmond, Va.) added eight points and two assists off the bench.

Concord Individual Leaders
- Abbie Smith notched 14 points and six rebounds to pace the Mountain Lions with Maddie Ratcliff putting up 12 points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench.
- Four different subs scored nine points on the evening with Jasiah Smith going adding seven rebounds, seven steals and two assists to lead the way.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry hit 26-of-42 (41.9%) of its shots, making four three-pointers. The Wasps were atypical at the free throw line, making just 51.9 percent (14-of-27) of their chances, a deviation of more than 20 percent from their season average.
- Concord shot 48.5 percent for the game, hitting five triples.
- CU held a 42-38 lead on the boards and posted a 13-6 margin on second-chance points.
- Concord forced 25 turnovers which they translated to 35 points while E&H managed 24 points off 22 Mountain Lion miscues.
