Carson-Newman Women’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 72-64, Wednesday Evening

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman University Women's Basketball Team (17-10, 12-5 SAC) built an 18-point third period lead and was able to defend a late push by Emory & Henry College (7-18, 4-13 SAC) Wednesday evening to capture a 72-64 South Atlantic Conference win.

How It Happened
- The two squads traded baskets and leads through the opening 10 minutes of the game with neither side leading by more than three points. Carson-Newman held a slight 16-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter. In the second, the Lady Eagles pushed the margin to seven (21-14) at the 7:21 mark but an 18-8 run by the Wasps gave them a 32-29 lead with 2:21 to go before halftime. C-N closed the frame with nine in a row to lead by a 38-32 margin at the intermission.
- Returning to action, Carson-Newman scored eight of the first 10 to go up 46-34. The Lady Eagles pressed their advantage to as much as 18 (55-37) late in the third but the Wasps responded with the next eight to cut the deficit to 10. C-N would take a 15-point advantage into the final period.
- A 19-4 run by Emory & Henry closed the gap 68-64 with just over one minute to play. Carson-Newman hit all four of its free throws down the stretch to hold off the surge and claim the 72-64 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Sophomore forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) had 10 points, 14 rebounds, two assists and two blocks for a double-double while redshirt freshman forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) went for 15 points, six boards and two assists.
- Senior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) chipped in 11 points and two assists as sophomore guard Mimi Traynham (Richmond, Va.) notched 10 points, three boards and three assists.
- Senior guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) tacked on eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Carson-Newman Individual Leaders
- Braelyn Wykle led all players with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals as Skylar Boshears and Campbell Penland registered 14 and 13 points respectively.
- Harli Smith had six points to go along with 11 rebounds and two assists as Keeleigh Rogers was a force in the paint with 13 rebounds, five assists and four blocks.
- Tori Rutherford led the Lady Eagles' bench with six points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot just 31.1 percent (23-of-74) for the game but made nine three-pointers. The Wasps were an efficient 9-for-11 (81.1%) at the charity stripe.
- Carson-Newman hit 24-of-68 (35.3%) of its shots including a half-dozen from long range. The Lady Eagles went 18-for-22 (81.8%) at the free throw line.
- E&H held a 53-42 rebounding advantage including 18 offensive boards. Two squads tied, 10-10, on second-chance points.
- C-N notched a 23-12 lead on fastbreak points, a 28-24 margin on points in the paint and a 15-8 tally on points off turnovers.
