Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Beats Newberry, 63-58, In Final Game Of The Season Saturday

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (8-18, 5-13 SAC) ended the year on a high note as it defeated Newberry College (8-20, 4-14 SAC) Saturday afternoon on the road. The Wasps never trailed in the contest as they won by a 63-58 margin.

How It Happened
- The Wasps got out to a 10-4 lead at the 6:29 mark of the opening period. Newberry tied things up at 10 points apiece but E&H closed on a 7-4 run to go ahead 17-14 through 10 minutes of action.
- Emory & Henry scored eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter to go up, 25-17. The Wolves hung tough and trimmed the deficit to three (31-28) at the intermission.
- The two squads traded baskets early in the third with E&H pulling ahead 39-32. Newberry drew the margin back to three at 41-38 with 2:54 on the clock as the Wasps would hold a 44-40 advantage going into the final frame.
- E&H pressed the margin to nine at 51-42 midway through the final period thanks to a 7-2 run that covered 4:09. A pair of triples by the Wolves got things back to a three-point game less than a minute later but another 7-2 run by the Wasps extended the lead back to eight with just under three minutes to play. Newberry got within two at 60-58 with 53 seconds on the clock but E&H made three of its final four free throws to come away with the 63-58 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Redshirt freshman forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) notched 15 points, four rebounds and two steals to lead the Wasps while sophomore forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) had 13 points and seven boards.
- Senior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) notched nine points while senior guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) put up seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
- Senior guard Taylor Owens (Bristol, Tenn.) finished with seven points and six rebounds.

Newberry Individual Leaders
- Giulia Bongiomo went for 10 points, three rebounds and three assists as Tyla Paraha had 10 points off the bench.
- Erick Wiseley posted nine points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks while Holly Davies and Payton Cronen had eight points and four rebounds each.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry hit 19-of-50 (38.0%) of its shots with seven three-pointers. The Wasps converted 81.8 percent (18-of-22) of their free throw chances.
- Newberry shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) for the game, making five triples. The Wolves were just 9-for-16 (56.3%) at the stripe.
- E&H posted a 41-32 lead on rebounding and a 16-13 margin on points off turnovers.
