Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Downs Southern Wesleyan, 74-51, Friday To Open The Year

BELMONT, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (1-0) got the 2023-24 campaign started with a convincing 74-51 win over Southern Wesleyan University (0-1) in a South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge Friday evening. The event is being hosted by Belmont Abbey College.

How It Happened
- The Wasps jumped out to a 10-3 lead at the 5:07 mark of the first quarter thanks in part to back-to-back baskets by sophomore forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.). The two squads went back and forth through the rest of the period with E&H leading, 17-12, through 10 minutes of action.
- SWU closed the gap to 17-15 with the first three points of the second, but Emory & Henry responded with a 14-6 run to take a 31-21 advantage midway through the frame. The Warriors scored five in a row to close the gap to 31-26 but the Wasps responded with the final five of the half to go into the locker room up 36-26.
- Returning to action, Southern Wesleyan scored six of the first nine points of the third to get within seven (39-32), but a 14-6 run by E&H stretched the margin to 53-38 with one quarter to play.
- After the Warriors scored the opening bucket of the fourth, the Wasps put up eight in a row for a 20-point advantage at 61-41 with 7:09 on the clock. SWU would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way as Emory & Henry cruised to the 74-51 victory.  

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Yarber led all players with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds to go along with two blocks. Junior guard Mimi Traynham (Richmond, Va.) posted 10 points and two assists while junior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) had nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
- Junior forward Grace Glance (Clyde, N.C.) tallied nine points, six boards and two steals off the bench as junior center Chelsi Hodges (Boone, N.C.) and freshman guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) notched seven points each with Harris tallying six rebounds of her own.

Southern Wesleyan Individual Leaders
- Shelby Glance paced the Warriors with 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks as Dynasty Shegog had eight points, two rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
- Lexi Griffen and Taylin Smith each added seven points with Griffen contributing three assists and two boards.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 27-for-66 (40.9%) for the game with six three-pointers. The Wasps made 77.8 percent (14-of-18) of their free throw attempts.
- Southern Wesleyan was just 31.7 percent (19-for-60) from the field with five makes from long range. The Warriors shot a chilly 8-for-18 (44.4%) from the charity stripe.
- E&H held a 51-33 rebounding advantage and used 15 offensive boards to lead 15-7 on second-chance points. The Wasps also outscored the Warriors, 26-14, on points in the paint.
- Emory & Henry assisted on 20 of 27 of its field goals (74%) and saw its bench outscore its SWU counterpart by a 33-20 margin.
