Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Outlasts King, 70-68, Tuesday Evening In Border Battle

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (2-1) scored the go-ahead basket with 13 seconds remaining and held on for a 70-68 come-from-behind victory over King (Tenn.) University (0-3) Tuesday evening on the road.

How It Happened
- E&H got out to a 6-2 lead early in the opening period but eight in a row but King made it a 10-6 contest with 2:37 on the clock. The two squads traded baskets late in the frame with the Tornado holding a 17-12 advantage through the end of the first.
- Emory & Henry scored the opening six points of the second forcing a King timeout. The Wasps extended their lead to 22-19 at the 6:42 mark of the second. King then went on an 11-4 run to lead 30-26 on its way to a 32-28 halftime advantage.
- Returning to action, the Tornado went on a 9-2 run for its largest lead of the game at 11 points (41-30). Emory & Henry then scored seven in a row and had a 13-2 run to close the period to lead, 50-49, with 10 minutes to play.
- In the fourth, the two teams went back and forth, tying the contest at 59 points apiece with 4:37 left to play. The Tornado then went on a 9-4 run for a 68-63 advantage but the Wasps responded scoring the next five to tie the game, 68-68, with 39 seconds to go. With 15 seconds remaining, junior guard Mimi Traynham (Richmond, Va.) got a steal and drove to the basket for the go-ahead score. The Tornado had a final look at the basket but following a blocked shot and a turnover gave the Wasps the win.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Traynham posted 13 points with three assists and three steals while junior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) put up a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists.
- Sophomore forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds while junior center Chelsi Hodges (Boone, N.C.) went for 10 points and three rebounds off the bench.
- Junior forward Grace Glance (Clyde, N.C.) notched eight points, eight rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks while junior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) tallied seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

King Individual Leaders
- Ashley Allen led the Tornado with nine points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks while Alayna Smith finished with nine points, five boards and two assists.
- Torey Walker and Jalaysia Office each had seven points off the bench.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry made just 38.9 percent (28-of-72) of its field goal attempts but was 9-for-18 (50%) in the fourth quarter. The Wasps were a white-hot 11-for-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line.
- King shot 26-for-61 (42.6%) from the floor with six three-pointers. The Tornado made just 52.6 percent (10-of-19) of its attempts from the stripe.
- The Wasps held a 43-41 rebounding advantage including a 14-10 margin on the offensive glass. The two teams tied, 11-11, on second-chance points.
- E&H posted a 46-32 lead on points in the paint and led 14-11 on fast-break points.
