Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Comes Up Just Short, 77-73, Against No. 4 Catawba Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (7-7, 2-4 SAC) battled No. 4 Catawba College (10-1, 5-0 SAC) through six ties and nine lead changes but the Lady Catawba Indians escaped with a 77-73 South Atlantic Conference win on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
- Emory & Henry jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 5:36 mark of the opening period but Catawba bounced back to knot the contest at 11 (3:15). The Wasps responded, going back up by five but five in a row by the visitors tied things, 16-16, at the end of the first period.
- Early in the second, E&H used a 14-5 run to push its lead out to nine at 30-21 with 6:29 on the clock. The two squads traded buckets for the majority of the quarter but Catawba was able to trim the deficit to 41-37 at the intermission.
- Returning to action, the Lady Catawba Indians went on a 16-4 run to start the third, earning their largest lead of the game at 53-45. Emory & Henry got a pair of three-point baskets from freshman guard Reagan Chapman (Rosman, N.C.) to close the stanza, making the score 53-51 in favor of Catawba with 10 minutes left to play.
- The Wasps started the fourth strong, going back ahead 60-58 with 7:35 remaining in the game. Catawba then scored nine of the next 11 to push their advantage back to five (67-62) with 4:25 on the clock.  E&H got within one point on two different occasions down the stretch but the Lady Indians held on for the 77-73 win.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Sophomore forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) notched a team-best 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. She also had four blocks and two assists on the day.
- Junior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) went for 12 points and six rebounds while freshman forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) notched nine points and seven boards.
- Chapman finished the game with eight points and three assists as junior guard Mimi Traynham (Richmond, Va.) went for six points, six assists and two rebounds.

Catawba Individual Leaders
- Lyrik Thorne posted a game-high 27 points with five three-pointers and added five assists and three steals. Janiya Downs went for 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists as Saniya Wilson contributed 10 points, three boards and two steals off the bench.
- Sara McIntosh tallied eight points and seven rebounds while Janiya Foskey chipped in eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) for the game with nine three-pointers, going 50 percent from deep. The Wasps hit 20-of-25 (80%) of their free throw attempts.
- Catawba made 26-of-71 (38.6%) of its field goal chances, connecting 10 times from beyond the arc. The Lady Indians were 75 percent (15-of-20) at the stripe.
- E&H held a 39-34 rebounding advantage despite being beaten, 13-7, on the offensive glass. Catawba posted a 28-22 lead on points in the paint.
- The Lady Indians took advantage of 29 Wasp miscues, holding a 21-11 margin on points off turnovers.
