UVA Wise Women’s Basketball Tops Emory & Henry, 81-67, Wednesday In Southwest Virginia Rivalry

WISE, Va. – The University of Virginia's College at Wise Women's Basketball Team (9-11, 5-7 SAC) used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Emory & Henry College (9-11, 4-8 SAC) for an 81-67 South Atlantic Conference win on Wednesday evening. The Cavaliers avenged a 76-72 win by the Wasps in December to split the season series.

How It Happened
- The two teams traded baskets through the opening three minutes of the contest for a 6-5 Wise lead. The Cavaliers then went on a 14-5 run to close the first quarter up, 20-9. UVA Wise scored the first five points of the second frame to press its margin to 25-9 with 8:43 on the clock. The Wasps then went on a 21-10 run through the final minutes of the half to close the gap to 35-30 at the intermission.
- Returning to action, E&H scored nine of the first 12 points to take a 39-38 lead. Trailing 49-44 with four minutes to go, the Wasps closed the third on an 11-6 run to tie the contest at 55.
- After another tie at 58-all with 8:27 to go, the Cavaliers went on a 12-0 run to take control, 70-58. Emory & Henry would get within eight with 1:07 to play but Wise made its final six free throws to seal the 81-67 victory.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Junior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) posted a team-high 19 points with four assists and two rebounds while junior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) added 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
- Freshman forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) went for a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, tacking on four assists and two steals as freshman Reagan Chapman (Rosman, N.C.) put up eight points and two boards off the bench.
- Junior forward Grace Glance (Clyde, N.C.) added six points, seven rebounds and two assists.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Sable Burnside led all players with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds while Katlin Burger had a double-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals.
- Sarah Burton and Caitlyn Ross each scored 14 points as Ross had seven rebounds and two assists. Burton went for five assists, three steals and two rebounds.
- Leah Kestner had six points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry went 22-for-61 (36.1%) from the floor with nine three-pointers. The Wasps shot 70 percent (14-for-20) at the free throw line.
- UVA Wise made 50 percent (32-of-64) of their field goal attempts with seven triples. The Cavaliers made 10-of-12 (83.3%) of their shots from the charity stripe.
- Wise held a 41-34 rebounding advantage but E&H used 14 offensive boards to post an 18-9 margin on second-chance points.
- The Cavaliers went for 21 points off turnovers, taking advantage of 16 Wasp miscues, and also held a 44-16 lead on points in the paint.
