Wingate Women’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 82-72, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Wingate University Women's Basketball Team (14-7, 9-4 SAC) built a 46-31 halftime lead and held on to defeat Emory & Henry College (9-12, 4-9 SAC) by an 82-72 score on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference action. The Bulldogs saw five players reach double figures in scoring on their way to the victory.

How It Happened
- E&H jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the 7:45 mark of the opening period, forcing a WU timeout. The Bulldogs quickly closed the gap to one with five in a row and took the lead at 17-16 with 3:16 on the clock on their way to a 26-19 advantage at the end of the quarter. Wingate pressed its margin to 16 at 44-28 thanks to a 14-3 run covering 2:49 on its way to a 46-31 lead at the intermission.
- Returning to action, the Wasps trimmed the deficit to eight with a 13-5 run that covered the first five minutes of the third quarter. E&H continued to keep the pressure on, getting within seven in the final minute and a half but five in a row by Wingate made it a 12-point contest (64-52) with 10 minutes left to play.
- The Bulldogs extended the lead back to 14 at 68-54 with 7:14 to go in the game. A 10-4 run by Emory & Henry got it back to single digits but Wingate would not let the Wasps get any closer than seven the rest of the way. WU scored six of the game's final nine points at the free throw line to seal the 82-72 win.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Junior forward Grace Glance (Clyde, N.C.) had 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals while junior center Chelsi Hodges (Boone, N.C.) posted 14 points, four boards and two helpers off the bench.
- Junior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) went for a double-double of 11 points, 10 rebounds and three assists as freshman forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) tallied 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.
- Junior guards Mimi Traynham (Richmond, Va.) and Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) each contributed nine points and four assists with Spainhour adding six boards.

Wingate Individual Leaders
- Emily Hege led all players with 20 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists while Hannah Clark going for 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
- Trinity Breedlove had 12 points and five boards as Lia Anderson tacked on 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.
- Laney Beale added 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 39.7 percent (25-for-63) for the game with 13 three-pointers. The Wasps made all nine of their free throw attempts.
- Wingate hit 29-of-65 (44.6%) of their field goal chances with eight makes from long range. The Bulldogs were nearly perfect at the stripe, hitting 94.1 percent (16-of-17) of their uncontested shots.
- E&H held a 41-34 rebounding advantage, but the Bulldogs dominated down low, outscoring the Wasps, 30-18, on points in the paint.
- Wingate also took advantage of 18 Emory & Henry errors while committing only eight of its own. The Bulldogs tallied a 23-6 lead on points off turnovers.
