
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (1-0) got the season started on Friday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge on the campus of Mars Hill University. The Wasps picked up a 79-65 win over Southern Wesleyan University (0-1) as junior forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) put up 37 points to lead the Wasps.

How It Happened
- The two teams traded baskets for the opening four and a half minutes to an 11-all tie. The Wasps went on a 13-8 run for the remainder of the period to lead, 24-19.
- Emory & Henry reeled off the eight points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 13 with 8:34 on the clock. A 14-6 run by the Warriors closed the gap to 37-33 later in the stanza but the Wasps scored eight of the final 10 to make it a 43-35 contest at the intermission.
- Returning to action, E&H got it back to a double-digit lead 2:06 into the third at 50-39. SWU erased the deficit, taking a 59-58 lead with 48 seconds to go in the quarter, but the Wasps responded to go back up 61-60 with 10 minutes left to play.
- The fourth quarter saw Emory & Henry retake control as it outscored Southern Wesleyan 18-5 including the final 12 of the contest to pull away for the final 79-65 score.
Emory & Henry Leaders
- Yarber went 11-for-19 from the field and 15-for-18 from the free throw line to score 37 points, the second most in a game in program history. She added six rebounds and a block.
- Sophomore guard Lyndie Ramsey (Elizabethton, Tenn.) scored 15 points on four triples with three rebounds, an assist and a steal while sophomore guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) had eight points, four rebounds and two assists.
- Senior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) had three points, pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with five steals and three assists as senior center Chelsi Hodges (Boone, N.C.) and sophomore forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) had five points each.
Southern Wesleyan Individual Leaders
- Taylin Smith led the Warriors with 23 points and nine rebounds while Kaliah Kendrick went for 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Asia Pearley posted seven points, five boards, two steals and two blocks as Peyton Looky and Alexis Glover went for six points apiece.
A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 41.4 percent (24-for-58) from the field, hitting five three-pointers. The Wasps went 26-for-33 (78.8%) at the free throw line.
- Southern Wesleyan made just 22-of-75 (29.3%) of their shots and were a frigid 3-for-33 (9.1%) from long range. The Warriors also struggled at the line, hitting just 58.1 percent (18-of-31) of their free throws.
- E&H held a 50-45 rebounding advantage and despite SWU grabbing 19 offensive boards, led 11-8 on second-chance points.
- The Wasps outscored the Warriors, 36-32, on points in the paint and 27-8 on the fastbreak.
- Southern Wesleyan led 20-14 on points off turnovers, taking advantage of 29 E&H miscues.
