Belmont Abbey Women’s Basketball Tops Emory & Henry, 60-49, To Conclude SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge Saturday

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey College Women's Basketball Team (1-1) opened up a 21-9 lead after the first quarter on it way to defeating Emory & Henry University (1-1) by a 60-49 score Saturday in a South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge on the campus of Mars Hill University.

How It Happened
- BAC jumped out to a 9-2 lead at the 6:08 mark of the opening period. Leading by six later in the quarter, the Crusaders finished on a 10-4 run for a 21-9 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
- Emory & Henry cut the deficit to eight midway through the second, but a 9-2 run in the final 4:53 of the half gave Belmont Abbey a 31-16 lead at the intermission.
- The first three and a half minutes of the third quarter saw the Crusaders extend their lead to 40-20, but a 9-3 run by the Wasps later in the period made it 48-33. The Abbey scored a final basket before the third quarter horn for a 17-point margin, 50-33, with one quarter to play.
- Belmont Abbey extended their lead back to 22 at 55-33 with 8:06 in the fourth. The Wasps showed some fight with a 15-3 run to carved into the deficit, making it a nine-point game with 30 seconds to go. BAC hit a pair of free throws down the stretch for the 60-49 final margin.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Senior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) had a team-high 12 points, adding three rebounds while senior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) posted seven points, three boards and three assists.
- Sophomore guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) went for seven points and two assists while sophomore guard Lydie Ramsey (Elizabethton, Tenn.) added six points, two rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Belmont Abbey Individual Leaders
- Riley James led all players with 15 points, adding four assists, two rebounds and two steals while Janiah Shular went for 13 points and six boards.
- Cate Scheiber posted 11 points while Abigail Crane and Peyton Nation had eight points apiece.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry hit 17-of-51 (33.3%) of their shots with five makes from long range. The Wasps shot 71.4 percent (10-for-14) at the free throw line.
- Belmont Abbey shot 51.1 percent (23-for-45) for the contest with six triples and an 8-for-12 (66.7%) performance at the stripe.
- BAC held a 34-27 rebounding advantage, but E&H used 11 offensive boards to post a 14-6 lead on second-chance points.
- The Wasps took care of the ball with only eight turnovers and forced 12 by the Crusaders.
- The Abbey was efficient down low, outscoring E&H 26-18 on points in the paint.
