UVA Wise Women’s Basketball Tops Emory & Henry, 80-66, In SAC Rivalry Wednesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The University of Virginia's College at Wise Women's Basketball Team (4-1, 1-0 SAC) saw five players reach double figures in scoring on the way to an 80-66 victory over Emory & Henry University (3-2, 0-1 SAC) Wednesday in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both squads.

How It Happened
- The Cavaliers got out to a 9-3 lead at the 5:28 mark of the opening period. E&H was able to close the gap down to 11-8 at the end of the quarter.
- Emory & Henry scored the first three points of the second to tie things up at 11 points apiece. A 14-1 run by Wise made it a 25-12 contest with 5:10 on the clock but the Wasps used a 12-6 run in the final four minutes of the half to close the gap to 34-26 at the intermission.
- Returning to action, the Cavs started on a 6-1 run to extend the lead to 13 at 40-27. Emory & Henry answered with a 10-5 scoring spurt to close the gap to 45-37. Wise would hold on for an eight-point margin with 10 minutes to play at 51-43.
- The first three and a half minutes of the fourth saw the Cavaliers extend their margin to 16 thanks to an 11-3 run. E&H continued to push, getting to within 12 points with 1:09 left but would get no closer as Wise claimed the 80-66 win.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Senior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) notched a career-high 26 points, going 6-for-12 from three-point range, and added three rebounds and two assists.
- Junior forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) had 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting and added six rebounds and two assists while sophomore forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) added eight points, 12 boards and two assists off the bench.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Katlin Burger led the Cavaliers with 19 points, nine rebounds and two assists while Alissa Cheek had 13 points, four boards and two assists off the bench.
- Macie Ridge went for 12 points, four rebounds and three assists with Caroline Mullins adding 12 points, three assists and two rebounds.
- Sable Burnside contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and two assists.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 35.6 percent (21-for-59) from the floor but made 11 three-pointers. The Wasps were unusually cool from the free throw line, making just 13-of-22 (59.1%) of their attempts.
- Wise shot 31-of-65 (47.7%) for the game with four triples. The Cavaliers hit 82.4 percent (14-of-17) of their chances from the stripe.
- UVA Wise held a 41-37 rebounding advantage but E&H took advantage of 10 offensive rebounds to hold a 17-6 lead on second-chance points.
- The Cavaliers dominated down low, outscoring the Wasps by a 44-16 margin on points in the paint.
