Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Downs Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, 65-46, To Close Out Puerto Rico Clasico Tuesday

GUAYNABO, PUERTO RICO – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (5-7) picked up its second win in as many days in the Puerto Rico Clasico, beating the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (0-2) by a 65-46 margin Tuesday morning.

How It Happened
- The contest opened slowly, with Emory & Henry taking a 6-0 lead at the 4:36 mark of the first period. Rio Piedras closed the gap to 10-6 at the end of the period thanks to a 6-4 run.
- Early in the second, the Gallitos got within one, 12-11, before E&H reeled off 12 in a row to lead 24-11 on the way to a 31-21 advantage at the break.
- The third quarter saw the Wasps come out like a shot, scoring 16 of the first 21 points over a span of 4:31 to lead 47-26. Emory & Henry finished the frame on a 9-3 run to make it a 56-33 contest going into the final 10 minutes.
- Rio Piedras outscored E&H by an 8-3 margin early in the fourth to close the gap to 18, but the Wasps responded with six in a row to make it a 65-41 contest. The Gallitos scored the last five points for the final 65-46 margin.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Senior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) led all players with a double-double, going for 23 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists while junior forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) hgad 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
- Sophomore guard Reagan Chapman (Rosman, N.C.) went for eight points, two rebounds and two steals as senior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) contributed seven points, five rebounds and three assists.

Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Individual Leaders
- Joyce Hernandez posted a team-high eight points and four rebounds off the bench while Naheim Suarez went for seven points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds.
- Joeysel Velazquez and Dayra Albaladejo each scored seven points with Velazquez adding four boards.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 28-for-58 (48.3%) for the game with four three-pointers. The Wasps struggled at the stripe, making just 35.7 percent (5-for-14) of their free throws.
- Rio Piedras shot just 30.2 percent (16-for-53) on the day with six triples. The Gallitos were an even 50 percent (8-for-16) at the free throw line.
- E&H held a 41-27 rebounding advantage and outscored UPR-RP, 44-16, on points in the paint.
- The Wasps also held a 19-14 lead on points off turnovers, taking advantage of 27 miscues by the Gallitos.
