UVA Wise Women’s Basketball Evades Emory & Henry, 82-80, In Southwest Virginia Rivalry Wednesday

WISE, Va. – The University of Virginia's College at Wise Women's Basketball Team (9-11, 6-10 SAC) hit the go-ahead basket with 1.7 seconds remaining and held off a buzzer-beating attempt by Emory & Henry University (6-16, 1-15 SAC) for an 82-80 victory in a South Atlantic Conference rivalry matchup Wednesday. The contest was back and forth all night, featuring three ties and 12 lead changes.

How It Happened
- The two squads traded baskets through the opening seven minutes of the contest to a 12-11 Wise advantage. The Wasps closed the frame with seven of the final nine points for an 18-14 lead through one.
- E&H pressed its margin to seven (25-18) with 7:09 on the second-quarter clock. Later in the frame, Wise scored five in a row to cut the deficit to two points but E&H would go into the break with a 33-29 advantage.
- UVA Wise took a 41-40 lead after a 12-7 run to start the third, but Emory & Henry responded with five straight to go back up by four with 5:34 remaining. A 12-2 run by the Cavaliers gave them a 53-47 advantage, but the Wasps close the gap to three (55-52) going into the fourth.
- Wise scored eight of the first 10 to start the fourth to go up 63-54 and extended the lead to 12 (77-65) with 2:19 left. Emory & Henry stormed back into the contest with a 15-3 run that covered 1:50 to tie things up at 80 on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.). The Cavaliers played for the last shot hitting a layup in traffic with 1.7 seconds remaining. E&H advanced the ball, but its attempt just before the buzzer was tipped as Wise got the 82-80 win.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Junior forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) had a game-high 26 points, adding five rebounds and five blocks while Hall notched a double-double, scoring 22 points and adding 11 rebounds.
- Senior guard Mimi Traynham (Richmond, Va.) posted 10 points, five assists and four boards off the bench with senior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) going for seven points, five assists and four rebounds.
- Sophomore guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) tacked on seven points and three boards as a reserve.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Ella Karst paced the Cavaliers with 18 points, including the game-winner, four rebounds and three assists while Caroline Mullins had 17 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for a double-double.
- Emilea Preece notched 15 points, three rebounds and two assists and Makenzie Bremer went for 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry went 26-for-64 (40.6%) for the game with nine makes from beyond the arc. The Wasps were a white-hot 95 percent (19-for-20) at the free throw line.
- UVA Wise hit 39.7 percent (29-for-73) of its field goal attempts, but made 14 three-pointers (48.3%). The Cavs were 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the stripe.
- Wise held a 44-40 rebounding advantage and used 14 offensive boards to lead 16-8 on second-chance points.
- E&H had a 30-12 lead on points in the paint.
- The Cavaliers outscored the Wasps, 16-4, on points off turnovers with E&H committing 12 errors to Wise's eight miscues.
