Warner Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Emory & Henry, 9-6, Friday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Lacrosse Team (0-2) fell in non-conference action to Warner University (1-0) Friday afternoon inside Fred Selfe Stadium in what was the first home contest in program history. The Royals defeated the Wasps by a 9-6 final score.

How It Happened
- Warner jumped ahead with just 41 seconds elapsed off of the scoreboard, but E&H responded with three consecutive goals. Sophomore midfielder Justyce Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.) was first to find the back of the net and freshman attacker Avery McHargue (Weaverville, N.C.) followed up with a pair of goals to give E&H the 3-1 advantage with 5:08 remaining in the opening quarter. Bailey Dykes scored  for Warner to make it a 3-2 match at the end of one.
- Both teams were held scoreless for the majority of the second quarter but Dykes tallied her second goal of the day with 1:47 to play. Jones converted on a free position shot to give the home team the 4-3 lead heading into halftime.
- The Royals went on a run in the third quarter as they recorded three unanswered goals, two coming from Dykes, to put them ahead 6-4 heading into the fourth and final stanza.
- Freshman attacker Bethany Beecher (Roanoke, Va.) struck first on a man up opportunity on an assist from sophomore defender Riley Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va.) with just 34 seconds expired in the fourth quarter to draw within one. Two more goals from Warner ballooned their lead back out to three with just over ten minutes left. Beecher struck again on the man up advantage on an assist from McHargue to trim the deficit to a pair, but the Wasps would get no closer as the visitors added one more goal and earned the 9-6 victory. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- It was a balanced attack on offense for the Wasps as Beecher, McHargue and Jones each contributed a pair of goals. Jones led the team with three draw controls and five ground balls while McHargue and freshman midfielder Meg Bruner (Otto, N.C.) each scooped up four.
- Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Evans (Gambrills, Md.) was big in goal for E&H as she finished with 11 saves for the afternoon.

Warner Individual Leaders
- Dykes was the leader for the Royals as she posted five goals, eight ground balls, five draw controls, six forced turnovers and an assist. Abby Petrillo contributed three goals and a caused turnover of her own.
- Kaylin Brown posted 10 saves in net for the Royals to earn her first win of the season.
