
SALISBURY, N.C. – The Emory & Henry Women's Lacrosse Team (1-4, 0-3 SAC) battled for all 60 minutes against Catawba College (3-3, 1-1 SAC), but came up short in South Atlantic Conference play Saturday afternoon. The Lady Catawba Indians utilized a big second period to defeat the Wasps by a 16-5 final score.

How It Happened
- The Wasps were first on the board when senior attacker Mina Hicks (Lexington Park, Md.) dodged a defender and beat the Catawba goalie for an unassisted goal, her ninth of the season, to put E&H up 1-0 at the 12:59 mark. The visitors from Emory added another goal just over 90 seconds later as sophomore attacker/midfielder Bethany Beecher (Roanoke, Va.) found the back of the net to push the Wasps' lead out to 2-0. Catawba would respond with four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead into the second period.
- The Lady Catawba Indians dominated the second period of play as they tallied eight straight scores to take a 12-2 advantage into the halftime break.
- Catawba struck first to begin the third period to push their advantage out to 13-2, but the Wasps broke up the streak at the 7:09 mark when Hicks recorded her second goal of the game to cut the deficit to 13-3. The Lady Catawba Indians added a goal a little over a minute later to make it 14-3 heading into the final period.
- Emory & Henry got back on the scoreboard to begin the fourth when sophomore attacker Avery McHargue (Weaverville, N.C) registered her ninth goal of the season to bring the Wasps back within 10 at 14-4. Catawba put the next goal on the board, but E&H struck back at the 1:27 mark when Hicks found freshman midfielder Alex Costello (Johnson City, Tenn.), who buried a shot for her first career collegiate goal. The home team would add one last score as time expired for the 16-5 victory.
Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Hicks paced the Wasps' offense with two goals, one assist, two draw controls, two caused turnovers and a ground ball. McHargue added one goal and a draw control while junior midfielder Justyce Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.) went for three ground balls, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
- Senior defender Riley Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va.) had a team-high four caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls while Beecher recorded one goal and scooped up a pair of ground balls.
- Junior goalie Kaitlyn Evans (Gambrills, Md.) made 11 saves in net while gathering a match-high six ground balls and causing one turnover.
Catawba Individual Leaders
- Michaela Lantz had a match-high three goals and three ground balls while five other Catawba players finished with a pair of goals.
- Ava Kunza recorded six saves in net and picked up three ground balls to earn the win for the home team.

- The Wasps step out of conference play on Wednesday, March 12 when they make the trip to take on former ODAC rival Ferrum College. First draw is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. from Ferrum, Virginia.
