EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Department of Athletics and Director of Athletics Kyle Sensabaugh are pleased to announce an organizational change and a pair of hires for the men's & women's wrestling programs.

Former assistant men's & women's wrestling coach Jeramiah Hampton has been elevated to Head Men's Wrestling Coach while Maria Ramos joins the E&H staff as Head Women's Wrestling Coach. The positions were previously organized as a Head Men's & Women's Wrestling Coach and an Assistant Men's & Women's Wrestling Coach and have been split to give both programs more dedicated attention from their coaches.

Jeramiah Hampton is in his second year on staff at Emory & Henry and fourth overall coaching college wrestling. He came to E&H in the fall of 2023 after serving as head wrestling coach at Southwest Virginia Community College. Across both institutions, Hampton has coached 10 national qualifiers including a NJCAA All-American in Austin Suess at SWCC.

Hampton was a standout prep wrestler at Alleghany High School in Sparta, North Carolina with a 135-33 high school record. A two-time all-state performer, his competitive career was cut short due to an injury which led him to join the United States Marine Corps.

During his time in the Marines, Hampton continued to be involved in combat sports, gaining experience with freestyle, Greco-Roman, catch wrestling, submission grappling, and the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program where he earned a black belt.

Hampton completed his undergraduate degree in exercise science at Concordia University, St. Paul in 2015 and earned a Master of Business Administration from CSP in 2019. He resides in Glade Spring, Virginia with his wife Teea and their two children, Eden and Rowan.

Maria Ramos joins the collegiate coaching ranks after a successful college career at Campbellsville University in Kentucky. During her four years with the Tigers, Ramos wrestled at the 109- and 116-pound weight classes and helped lead the team to the WCWA Women's National Championship and the NWCA Women's National Dual Championship in 2018.

Ramos' wrestling experience began when she was in eighth grade. She became the first girl in VHSL history to make the finals of the Virginia State Tournament, taking state runner-up honors in 2015. In addition to competing, she has coached multiple teams and age groups of wrestlers.

Ramos graduated from Campbellsville in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Spanish Education. She resides in Chilhowie with her husband, Tyler Young.

Emory & Henry will get the 2024-25 wrestling season underway the first weekend of November.
