
DANVILLE, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Men's Wrestling Team continued the open portion of its schedule on Sunday at the Cougar Open hosted by Averett University. The Wasps saw three wrestlers place in the top seven positions in their respective weight classes.

125 Pounds
- Senior Tito Hernandez (Shelbyville, Tenn.) received a first round bye, then dropped his second round bout to Anakin Burks of Shenandoah University by a 15-0 tech fall. Hernandez rebounded with a win by a 23-19 decision over Shenandoah's Elliot Rivera in his first consolation bout. He was then defeated by Dominic Pascoe of Averett by fall in 34 seconds to end his day.
133 Pounds
- Senior Avery Almany (Bristol, Tenn.) got his day underway with back-to-back wins by fall in the first two championship rounds. He pinned Randolph College's Faithful Fulcher in 44 seconds in the first round before pinning Maximillian Connell of Marymount in 3:46 in the second round. Almany then pinned Roanoke College's Sean Hall in the quarterfinal round in 54 seconds. Trent Proctor of Ferrum College defeated Almany by a 9-1 major decision in the semifinal, then Almany lost by fall to Joseph Custodio of Marymount in 2:42 in the third-place match to take home fourth.

- Junior Logan Arnold (Rocky Mount, Va.) had a quick start to the open with a 20-3 tech fall victory over Rcey Ortega of Liberty University in the opening round, then followed up with another tech fall win over Roanoke's Jack MacDonald by a 17-0 margin in the second round. Arnold was pinned by Josiah Canales of Ferrum in 52 seconds in the quarterfinal and bowed out of the tournament with a loss by fall to Shenandoah's Sean Rinebolt in 3:36 in the fourth consolation round.
157 Pounds
- Senior Levi Field (Manassas, Va.) received a bye in the opening championship round then dropped a 15-6 major decision to Andru Boyd of Roanoke in the second championship round. Field was defeated by a close 10-4 decision by Averett's Andres Cortes in his first consolation bout to end his day.
- Freshman Zane Perkins (Wytheville, Va.) advanced due to a bye in the first round, then was pinned by Matox Allen of Liberty in the second round in 4:21. Perkins responded quickly in his first consolation bout as he pinned Valentino Antoine from Marymount in 4:25. He then was dispatched by fall against Kairyn Hall of Bluefield State in 57 seconds in the third round of the consolation bracket.

- Sophomore Sebastian Gaberrete (Jeffersonton, Va.) was defeated by fall in 1:37 by the Apprentice School's Ethan Baker in the opening round. He then mounted a great comeback as he wrestled his way through the consolation bracket. Gabarrete defeated Willie Toliver of Averett by a 20-3 tech fall, then topped David Ales of Apprentice School by fall in 1:20. He continued his winning ways by earning a 12-7 decision win over St. Andrews' Akazee Kum Akab A Sei in the third consolation round and posted a 16-4 major decision against Nicholas DaSilva of WVU Tech in the fourth round. He dropped a 18-0 tech fall to Marcus Lewis of Marymount in the consolation semifinal before being awarded seventh place by no contest against East Stroudsburg's Max Winkler.

- Redshirt freshman Evan Alger (Pulaski, Va.) received a first-round bye, then pinned St. Andrews' Dakota Johnson in 2:05 in the second championship round. He followed that performance with another win by fall in the quarterfinal, this time in 3:25 over Wyatt Sage of Roanoke. He fell by a close 7-2 decision to David McElravy Jr. of Apprentice School in the semifinal bout, but was awarded third place due to a medical forfeit from Christain Populas of Allen University.
