Emory & Henry Men’s Wrestling Has Strong Showing At Inaugural Wasps Men’s Open Tournament

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Men's Wrestling Team returned to the open portion of its 2024-25 schedule on Saturday as E&H hosted the first annual Wasps Men's Open Tournament. The Wasps saw three wrestlers compete over three different weight classes. Freshman Zane Perkins (Wytheville, Va.) finished second at 157 pounds, senior Tito Hernandez (Shelbyville, Tenn.) secured a third-place finish at 125 pounds and sophomore Sebastian Gaberrete (Jeffersonton, Va.) took home fourth in the combined 165/174 pounds weight class

125 Pounds
- Hernandez came up short in his opening match of the day as he dropped a 30-20 major decision to UNC Pembroke's Cameron Greene. Hernandez then bounced back with a come-from-behind victory as he pinned Wyatt Stemberger of Davis & Elkins College in 4:29. Hernandez rounded out his day with a loss by fall to Bluefield State's Larry Rhodes in 2:22.

157 Pounds
- Perkins began his day with a hard-fought win by a 12-10 decision over Davis & Elkins' Gabriel Pujadas. He followed up with another win, this time by fall in 1:34 against Sam Giordano. Perkins came up just short of taking home the title as he was pinned by Bluefield State's Kairyn Hall in 3:45 in the championship bout. 

165/174 Pounds
- Gaberrete got off on the right foot to start the tournament as he dispatched Sagbe Sieh of Bluefield State by an 8-6 decision in the opening round. He then fell by a 23-15 major decision to King's Brad Mahoney in the second round, and dropped an 8-6 decision to Augustus Elliott of UNC Pembroke in the third round. After a win by medical forfeit in the fourth round, Gaberrete got back in the win column with a 10-2 major decision victory over Bluefield State's Thomas Dolo. He picked up another win in the sixth round as he topped Jamar Morris of King (Tenn.) University by a 13-4 major decision. Gaberrete ended his day with a 5-0 loss to Davis & Elkins' Bradden Galassi in the seventh and final round.

- The Wasps are back in action on Tuesday, January 21 when they travel to Bluefield, West Virginia for a Conference Carolinas tri-match against Bluefield State and Montevallo.
