Emory & Henry Women’s Rugby Earns Two Wins At Newberry Sevens Tournament

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Rugby Team (3-4) picked up a pair of victories this past Sunday, October 1 at the Newberry Sevens Tournament. The Wasps defeated Warren Wilson College and the host Newberry College after falling to Guilford College and Lander University.

The Lander Match
- The Bearcats scored early and often in the opening match as they put 30 points on the scoreboard. Freshman Zoe Dewees (Virginia Beach, Va.) broke through for the Wasps as she found the try zone to put Emory & Henry on the board for the 30-5 final. 

The Guilford Match
- The Quakers posted a shutout in the second meeting of the year between the two squads as they cruised to a 24-0 victory. 

The Warren Wilson Match
- The Wasps picked up their play in the third game of the afternoon. Junior Rem Johnson (Stephens City, Va.) came up big as they put E&H up with a try early in the match. Sophomore Gracie Wall (Winder, Ga.) followed up with a penalty try to push the Wasps' total to 12. Freshman Grace Hamilton (Abingdon, Va.) got in on the action with a try of her own before Johnson posted their second try of the game and Dewees was good with the conversion kick to run the match's score to its final at 24-12. 

The Newberry Match
- E&H came out roaring in its final match of the day, pitching a shutout against the host school. Hamilton got the ball rolling with a try to put the Wasps up 5-0 early. Senior Pearl Dill (Hardy, Va.) was next to find the try zone as her score made it 10-0. Hamilton and Dill kept their scoring afternoon going as they each posted one more try and the Wasps finished off the 20-0 rout. 

Wall and Johnson earned Emory & Henry Players of the Tournament accolades for their efforts.
