Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Peace, 9-0, Sunday On The Road

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team improved to 2-0 Sunday with a decisive win over Peace College (0-3). Five different players scored for the Wasps, who scored the most goals since defeating Mary Baldwin College 13-1 on September 2, 2008.

After nearly 20 scoreless minutes of play, sophomore forward Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C.) took a pass from freshman midfielder Maddy Guzman (Cleveland, Ohio) and put it past the keeper for the score.

The Wasps scored their second and third goals in the next 10 minutes to go up 3-0 at the 27:09 mark, a lead that would remain until halftime. Junior midfielder Kellie Flaherty (South Lake, Texas) and freshman midfielder Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) found the back of the net for E&H. Merriman's goal was assisted by senior midfielder Loren Favale (Chester, Va.)

After the break, Myer scored her second goal and Favale recorded her second assist of the match in the 50thh minute. Merriman would not be undone and notched her second goal just over five minutes later, assisted by freshman defender Brittney Horn (Lawndale, N.C.).

In the 63rd minute, Myer and Favale switched roles, as Favale recorded the goal. Merriman and Horn would link up again to complete Merriman's hat trick with 25:41 remaining in the match.

Freshman defender Sarah Gorenflo (Matthews, N.C.) scored the final two goals for E&H, in the 68th and 70th minute, assisted by junior midfielder Yancey Wilmoth (Old Fort, N.C.) and Horn, respectively.

Senior Hayley Poland (Mechanicsville, Va.) stopped the only shot she faced in the match as the Wasps outshot the Pacers 39-1 and led the battle of corner kicks 11-0.

Emory & Henry continues its road trip when it travels to North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
