Emory & Henry Women's Soccer Battles Guilford To A 1-1 Tie Wednesday

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (4-2-1, 0-1-1 ODAC) and Guilford College (5-2-2, 0-0-2 ODAC) played the maximum 110 minutes Wednesday afternoon but a winner could not be decided as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The Wasps picked up one point in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings for the tie.

Guilford made their mark in the scoring column just 23:18 into the contest as Bri Eilman found the head of Jaclyn Nucci on a corner kick. Nucci was able to put the ball just out of the goalkeeper's grasp to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Quakers. The margin would remain 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half and into halftime.

Just after the hour mark (61:27), freshman forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season as she split two defenders and chipped the ball over the keeper to the far post to equalize the match.

The contest would remain knotted at one goal apiece through the rest of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

Emory & Henry sophomore Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Hayley Poland (Mechanicsville, Va.) tallied six and five saves in goal, respectively while Guilford's Amy Baker had three saves on the day.

The Wasps will return to the pitch on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. when they take on the Hornets of Lynchburg College.
