Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Defeats Hollins, 3-1, On Senior Night Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (5-3-1, 1-2-1 ODAC) picked up its first win in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Wednesday night as the Wasps defeated Hollins University (1-8, 0-4 ODAC), 3-1, at Fred Selfe Stadium. Seniors Alison Azbell (Morganton, N.C.), Loren Favale (Chester, Va.) and Hayley Poland (Mechanicsville, Va.) were all honored prior to the match.

Emory & Henry got on the board late in the ninth minute as sophomore forward Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C.) dribbled down the right side of the field and finished to the back post, to give the Wasps a 1-0 lead.

E&H came out of the gate in the second half and scored just 4:32 into the period. Myer got her second goal of the contest to make the score 2-0.

The Wasps added a third goal just before the hour mark. Sophomore defender Kasey Simmons (Chesapeake, Va.) converted a free kick from 30 yards out, chipping the ball over the keeper.

Hollins struck pay dirt in the 63rd minute to avoid the shutout as Ashley Smith placed the ball to the right of the keeper and into the net.

Poland picked up the win in goal making two saves while Hollins' Kristen Norkus had two saves in the loss.

Emory & Henry will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. on Saturday to take on Eastern Mennonite University. The Wasps and the Royals will meet on the pitch at 2:00 p.m.
