Emory & Henry Women's Soccer Shuts Out North Carolina Wesleyan, 3-0, Sunday

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (7-5-1) picked up a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon over the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College (1-12). The win was the first for the Wasps under Interim Head Coach Rachel Preston, who was elevated to the mentor's spot in the middle of last week.

Freshman forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) started the contest off with a goal in the 16th minute as she took a cross from sophomore forward Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C.) and beat the keeper for the score.

Myer and Merriman linked up again 20 minutes later (35:42) for Merriman's team-leading ninth goal of the season as the Wasps went up 2-0.

Myer got a goal of her own 5:31 before halftime. Junior midfielder Kellie Flaherty (South Lake, Texas) played a ball into space and Myer was able to juke the keeper for an open shot and the score.

Emory & Henry senior goalkeeper Hayley Poland (Mechanicsville, Va.) registered four saves in one half of play and combined with sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) for the shutout. North Carolina Wesleyan's Paige Brooks tallied seven saves despite the loss.

The Wasps will travel to Randolph College on Wednesday to face the WildCats at 4:30 p.m.
