LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (8-5-1, 3-4-1 ODAC) picked up an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory Wednesday afternoon. The Wasps defeated the WildCats of Randolph College, 1-0, in overtime at WildCats Stadium.
The two squads battled for 90 minutes, but neither side was able to break the tie. Randolph was awarded a penalty kick just after the hour mark, but E&H sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) held strong and made the save to preserve the 0-0 score.
Just 1:31 into the overtime period, the Wasps seized their opportunity to end the match and come away with a victory. Junior midfielder Kellie Flaherty (South Lake, Texas) took a look from 40 yards out and put the ball past the keeper. The goal was Flaherty's third of the season and first since September 4 against Peace College.
Jerome picked up the win in goal, with three saves in 47 minutes played; she and senior Hayley Poland (Mechanicsville, Va.) combined for their second-straight shutout. Randolph's Hunter Gibson made four saves despite the loss.
Emory & Henry will travel to Virginia Beach, Va., on Saturday to take on Virginia Wesleyan College. The Wasps and Marlins will kick off at 2:00 p.m.
