Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Downs Sweet Briar, 4-1, Saturday On The Road

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (9-7-1, 4-6-1 ODAC) picked up a 4-1 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play over Sweet Briar College (1-13, 0-11 ODAC).With the win, the Wasps have guaranteed themselves a winning season for the first time since 2009.

Emory & Henry got on the board late in the fourth minute as freshman forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) scored from the top of the 18-yard box. The Wasps added to their lead 10 minutes later (14:50) when senior midfielder Alison Azbell (Morganton, N.C.) tallied an unassisted goal from nearly the same spot on the field to make the score 2-0.

E&H would strike again before the half. Junior midfielder Kellie Flaherty (South Lake, Texas) took a shot from 25-yards out and placed the ball past the keeper, to give the Wasps a 3-0 advantage going into the break.

After nearly 30 minutes of play in the second half, Emory & Henry tallied their final goal of the match. Merriman took a pass from freshman Ellyn Colles (Lyndhurst, Ohio) and finished from close range with 16:14 left to go in the contest.

Sweet Briar would avoid the shut out at the 76:32 mark as Alison Lifka took a shot from 35 yards out that hit the cross bar and bounced into the goal.

Emory & Henry held a 32-5 advantage on shots and led 10-6 on corner kicks.

Senior Hayley Poland (Mechanicsville, Va.) picked up the win in goal, making two saves for the Wasps while the Vixens' Seanne Weekes made 13 saves despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will await the pairings for the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament which will be released in the middle of the week. The Wasps are projected to be on the road against the Hornets of Lynchburg College on Saturday, October 29.
