Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Tames Sweet Briar, 6-0, Wednesday In ODAC Opener

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (2-3, 1-0 ODAC) took advantage of two goals and an assist by sophomore Ellyn Colles (Lydurst, Ohio) en route to defeating Sweet Briar College (0-2, 0-1 ODAC) by a 6-0 score Wednesday evening to open the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season.

The 5-0 win was the largest margin of victory for E&H since the Wasps defeated then-Peace College (now William Peace Univerity) by a 9-0 score on September 4, 2011.

Emory & Henry got on the board early in the 38th minute as sophomore midfielder Maddy Guzman (Cleveland, Ohio) took a pass from high school teammate Colles and shot into the left side of the goal.

The Wasps struck again just over six minutes later (43:23) as Colles played a give and go with sophomore midfielder Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) for her first goal of the season as the Wasps took a 2-0 lead into the half.

After the break, Colles added a second goal at the 58:49 mark as she took a pass from freshman midfielder Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) from the right wing and finished it past the keeper.

The Wasps next two scores came less than 90 seconds apart. After senior midfielder Kellie Flaherty (South Lake, Texas) converted a penalty kick, junior forward Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C.) dribbled down the right side of the box and but the ball across the face of the goal to put E&H up 5-0.

Emory & Henry concluded the scoring with 8:47 left to go in the contest. Junior midfielder Ashlie Caldwell (Roanoke, Va.) took a centering pass from junior midfielder Jessi Biggs (Vienna, Va.) and finished to the back side of the goal for her second score of the year.

The Wasps dominated statistically as well, outshooting the Vixens, 31-2 and holding a 10-0 advantage on corner kicks.

E&H junior Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) picked up the shutout in goal while Sweet Briar's Katherine Tillson made nine saves despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will travel to Ashland, Va., Saturday to face off against Randolph-Macon College. Kickoff for the ODAC contest is set for 11:00 a.m.
