Shenandoah Women’s Soccer Takes Care Of Emory & Henry, 4-1, Saturday Afternoon

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University Women's Soccer Team (5-7-1, 3-3-1 ODAC) picked up a 4-1 victory over Emory & Henry (3-9, 2-6 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Shintel Stadium. The contest was the first meeting between the two schools since August 30, 2003, a 4-1 win for E&H. It also kicks off a new rivalry between the Wasps and Hornets, as Shenandoah joined the Old Dominion Athletic Conference this past July, leaving the USA South.

SU put a pair of scores on the board in the first half with Courtney Stull finding Sarah Hensley for a goal late in the 22nd minute and Hannah Oakes finding the back of the net at the 37:52 mark. The score would remain 2-0 through the end of the first 45 minutes. The E&H back line forced Shenandoah offside four times in the first half.

After the intermission, the Hornets got a third goal just 6:42 into the period. Stull was credited with her second assist of the night, this time connecting with Brittany Butcher.

A red card at the 51:47 mark on the E&H goalkeeper for handling the ball outside the 18-yard box forced the Wasps to finish nearly 40 minutes of the contest with 10 players. Shenandoah added an insurance goal six-and-a-half minutes later as Butcher found Danielle Burris for the tally.

With 10:46 remaining in the contest, Emory & Henry cracked the SU defense to spoil the Hornets' shutout hopes. Junior midfielder Ashlie Caldwell (Roanoke, Va.) scored her third goal of the season after receiving a diagonal ball through the back line from sophomore midfielder Maddy Guzman (Cleveland, Ohio). She then went one-on-one with the goalkeeper to make the final score 4-1.

Sophomore midfielder Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) and freshman defender Katheryn McGinnis (Hickory, N.C.) each had scoring opportunities as well for the Wasps.

The Emory & Henry goalkeepers made five saves in the contest as the Wasps were outshot 22-7 by the Hornets.

E&H will return to Fred Selfe Stadium for a 6:00 p.m., matchup with Roanoke College on Tuesday evening. The contest will be one of three straight at home for the Wasps.
