Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Takes Down Eastern Mennonite, 4-0, On Senior Night Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (5-10, 4-7 ODAC) dominated with a balanced scoring attack against Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Eastern Mennonite (3-12-1, 0-10-1 ODAC) Saturday evening at Fred Selfe Stadium. Four different Wasps registered a goal as they rolled to a 4-0 shut-out victory over the Royals.

The team honored seniors Tosin Sanusi (Saint Leonard, Md.), Kellie Flaherty (South Lake, Texas) and Yancey Wilmoth (Old Fort, N.C.) prior to the contest.

Sanusi got the Wasps on the board when she served up an assist from the left side of the field finding the foot of freshman midfielder Emily Belanger (Tampa, Fla.). EMU goalkeeper Jenni Beck had four saves in the first half and kept the score at a 1-0 E&H advantage heading into the break.

The Wasps came out with a barrage of goals after the intermission, the first coming off a penalty kick that Flaherty drove into the right corner of the net past a diving keeper.

Less than ten minutes later (62:52), freshman midfielder Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) registered the first of her two assists with a cross from the left side and a textbook finish by sophomore midfielder Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C).

The scoring was capped off five minutes later when Vaughn again served it in from the left side to junior midfielder Jessi Biggs (Vienna, Va.), who one-timed the ball into the back of the net off the far post.

The defense was stifling while limiting the Royals to three shots for the game and forced eight offside calls.

Wasp junior goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) needed only one save to record her second shutout of the season while Beck finished the contest with eight saves.

Emory & Henry will wrap up its regular season schedule on Wednesday when it travels to Guilford College. A win against the Quakers will guarantee E&H a spot in the 2012 ODAC Tournament, which is set to begin on Saturday, October 27.
