Bryn Mawr Women’s Soccer Slips By Emory & Henry, 1-0, Saturday In The Swat Kick Classic

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College Women's Soccer Team (1-0) got a goal just seconds before the hour mark and held on for a 1-0 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (0-1) Saturday afternoon in the Swat Kick Classic.

The two squads battled close during the first half to a scoreless tie. Both the Wasps and Owls had four shots on goal including two from E&H senior midfielder Jessi Biggs (Vienna, Va.). The overall shot count was 7-6 in favor of Bryn Mawr while the Wasps outfouled the Owls 5-2 in the opening period.

After the break, the match continued to be close until Marian Slocum broke through for BMC with a goal at the 59:58 mark. Emory & Henry had several opportunities to attack late in the game but couldn't connect the last pass.

For the contest, Bryn Mawr held a 12-8 shot advantage while the two teams were tied with two corner kicks apiece. E&H committed seven total fouls to just four for BMC while the Wasps forced the Owls to be offside twice in the match.

Senior Ashlie Caldwell (Blue Ridge, Va.) and sophomores Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) and Emily Belanger (Tampa, Fla.) each had shots on goal for the Wasps from their positions in the midfield.

Bryn Mawr goalkeeper Valentina Viertel made five saves as she picked up the shutout win while E&H senior Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) stopped seven shots despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Sunday when it faces off against Swarthmore College in the final day of the Swat Kick Classic. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
