Swarthmore Women’s Soccer Defeats Emory & Henry, 5-0, Sunday In Swat Kick Classic

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College Women's Soccer Team (2-0) scored four goals in the first half en route to a 5-0 victory over visiting Emory & Henry College (0-2) Sunday afternoon in the Swat Kick Classic.

Swarthmore, winners of 13 matches last year and semifinalists in the ECAC South Region Tournament, got on the board in the eighth minute as Emma Sindelar took a pass from Julia Murphy and beat the goalkeeper to the near post.

The Garnet made it 2-0 20 minutes later on a penalty kick by Melissa Trofa. Three minutes later (30:14), Caroline Khanna's shot rebounded to Rebecca Mayeda and she was able to find the back of the net.

Just 90 seconds before halftime, Mayeda converted the second penalty of the day for Swarthmore to make the score 4-0.

In the second half, the Emory & Henry defense stabilized and freshman goalkeeper Vicki Fenley (Chesapeake, Va.) got her first collegiate action. Fenley made five saves in her 45:00 of play between the posts. Senior defender Kasey Simmons (Chesapeake, Va.) and sophomore Emily Belanger (Tampa, Fla.) both played outstanding defense as they were able to break up the Garnet attack.

The lone hiccup in the final 45 minutes came with 16:02 left on the clock. Amy DiPierro received a long pass from Amanda Bosworth which she placed past the keeper on the near side.

E&H once again played a high back line, forcing Swarthmore offside on 11 different occasions during the afternoon, despite being outshot 25-2.

Emory & Henry will return home for its first contest at Fred Selfe Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Wasps will host the Rams of Bluefield College at 7:30 p.m. Two years ago, E&H shut out Bluefield at home by a 1-0 score to open the season.
