Bluefield Women’s Soccer Escapes With 3-2 Overtime Win Against Emory & Henry Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – In a match that came down to extra time, the Bluefield College Women's Soccer Team (2-0) was able to squeak out a 3-2 win over Emory & Henry College (0-3) Wednesday evening at Fred Selfe Stadium.

E&H got on the board just 9:21 into the game. Junior forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) scored her first goal of the year after taking a pass from junior defender Brittney Horn (Lawndale, N.C.) and placing it in the top left 90 of the net.

The Wasps added another goal five minutes later. Merriman was on the starting end of the play as she settled her own deflected shot and found sophomore midfielder Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.), who slotted the ball past the keeper. The 2-0 margin would remain through halftime.

After the break, Bluefield drew the score to 2-1 in the 50th minute on a goal by Missy Baines. The Lady Rams equalized at the 58:47 mark as Ashley Moreno headed in Victoria Doyle's corner kick.

Both E&H and Bluefield had opportunities to seal the match late in regulation, but neither side could get the upper hand. Seven minutes into overtime, the Lady Rams took the victory. Whitney Browning received a pass from Jessica Newman with the goalkeeper out of position and tapped it home for the victory.

Kayla Richardson picked up the win in goal for Bluefield making three saves. Emory & Henry freshman Vicki Fenley (Chesapeake, Va.) also stopped three shots in her first collegiate start.

The Lady Rams held an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks, but were outshot 16-14 by the Wasps.

Emory & Henry will travel to Fredericksburg, Va., on Saturday to take on the University of Mary Washington. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
