SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (1-7, 1-1 ODAC) picked up its first win of the year Wednesday afternoon in thrilling fashion over Sweet Briar College (2-1-1, 0-1 ODAC). The Wasps won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest, 1-0, in the closing minutes of double overtime.

The two teams battled back and forth for 90 minutes of regulation, but Emory & Henry held a 17-11 shot advantage including 12-6 on shots on goal. E&H senior goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) made a trio of impressive saves in the first half that could easily have turned into goals for the Vixens.

Sophomore midfielder Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) and senior midfielder Ashlie Caldwell (Blue Ridge, Va.) combined for seven shots on goal but the Wasps could not find the back of the net during normal time.

In the extra period, the Emory & Henry defense came up strong. Freshmen Katherine DeBusk (Fluvanna, Va.) and Willow Hubbard (Asheville, N.C.) made several big tackles that broke up the Sweet Briar attack and turned the momentum back the way of E&H.

With just 1:51 remaining in the second overtime and a scoreless draw looming, Emory & Henry earned a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Gabby Paspa (Hickory, N.C.) served a ball into the middle that junior forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) headed past the Vixen's keeper for the sudden victory goal.

For the match, Emory & Henry held a 24-15 advantage on shots including a 16-9 shots on goal margin. The Wasps also led 9-5 on corner kicks.

Jerome finished the match with nine saves, earning the clean sheet while Kat Day made 15 saves for the Vixens despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will return home on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., for an ODAC matchup with Shenandoah University. The Wasps fell by a 4-1 score last season when they made their first trip to the Shenandoah Valley since 2003.
