Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Battles Shenandoah To 0-0 Tie

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (1-7-1, 1-1-1 ODAC) battled for 110 minutes with Shenandoah University (4-4-1, 2-0-1 ODAC) on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium, but neither side found the back of the net. The Wasps held the Hornets, who are atop the league standings, without a goal to earn a point for the tie.

The two squads went back and forth for the first 45 minutes of play with neither side appearing to have a decisive advantage. Shenandoah had four shots on goal during the opening half, but all were turned away by senior Emory & Henry goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.).

The Hornets came out of the break quickly and had the Wasps on their heels for the early portions of the second half. E&H settled in however and broke up each SU attack with strong play from the back line.

As Emory & Henry found itself tied late in the contest, the Wasps began to move the ball forward and have opportunities on goal. Sophomore midfielder Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) ripped a shot from the right side that the Shenandoah keeper got in front of. Senior defender Kasey Simmons (Chesapeake, Va.) also nearly had a goal on a free kick in the closing minutes of regulation, but the shot was punched over the top of the goal.

The overtime did not afford either team many opportunities to steal the victory as play was concentrated mostly in the midfield. When either side made a run with one of their forwards, the opposing defense was there to stop the attack.

Jerome earned her second-straight clean sheet with 11 saves while Shenandoah's Erin Septer made three stops in the contest.

The Hornets outshot the Wasps, 19-8, and held a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks, but the most important column remained blank for both sides.

Emory & Henry will host No. 14 Lynchburg College on Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m., in an ODAC matchup at Fred Selfe Stadium.
