Blair Vaughn Featured In Emory & Henry's Weekly Service Digest

EMORY, Va. - Emory & Henry College sophomore Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) stepped outside her comfort zone from being a key player on the soccer field this semester and began tutoring adults who are preparing for General Educational Development (GED) testing.

"I thought it would be a good change of pace after tutoring children through the Emory & Henry Tutoring Program," said Vaughn. Through the Mount Rogers Adult Educational Program, Vaughn volunteers at the Meadowview First Clinic in the town square during three-hour sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays each week.

The primary goal of the program is to assist individuals with taking and passing the GED test. Teachers and volunteers work with potential examinees on each of the five subjects covered on the final test.

"At first, I was worried about the age difference or that I would give them the wrong advice, but it's really been enjoyable." Although Vaughn volunteers only one hour each week, she's already become fond of the people she serves.

She has become acquainted with a woman in her fifties who was laid off from her job. "I'm glad she has decided to continue her education," Vaughn added. "It's rewarding to see these adults come to the understanding that education is something they need for success. This experience has made me even more thankful for the education I am receiving."
