Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Battles Hollins To A Scoreless Draw

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team battled Hollins University (4-11-1, 3-8-1 ODAC) for 110 minutes, but neither team was able to score. The Wasps finish the 2013 campaign with a 4-12-2 record and a 4-6-2 mark in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

Emory & Henry outshot Hollins by a 38-6 margin including 18 shots on goal, but was not able to put a ball past the goalkeeper despite dominating play. The Wasps also held a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Wasps put nine shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes of the match including five in the opening 15 minutes.

In the second half, E&H had another five shots on goal but one of the best chances of regulation came when senior defender Kasey Simmons (Chesapeake, Va.) hit the crossbar with a free kick in the 78th minute. The Wasps peppered the HU goalkeeper in the final 10 minutes of the regulation but could not get the breakthrough.

Emory & Henry continued to get chances in the two overtime periods but failed to convert. Seniors Jessi Biggs (Vienna, Va.) and Ashlie Caldwell (Blue Ridge, Va.) had back-to-back shots that nearly found the back of the net and junior Maddy Guzman (Cleveland, Ohio) hit the crossbar with a shot in the 99th minute.

The second overtime saw Hollins play with more tenacity than it had the whole game. While the green-and-gold failed to get a chance at goal, HU kept the ball in their attacking third for a larger portion of the period. The Wasps had three more shots, including a one-timer by junior Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) that went just wide of the goal, but the score would go final at 0-0 after 110 minutes of play.

Merriman finished the match with nine shots including six on goal while Guzman and Caldwell had seven and five shots, respectively. Senior Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) made one save for the Wasps as she earned the shutout, and was relatively unchallenged for much of the contest.

Hollins' Megan McKee tallied 18 saves in the match, earning a shutout as well. Becca Logan had four shots including one on goal for HU.
