MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Piedmont College Women's Soccer Team (1-1) scored a pair of goals in the first half and added three more in the final 45 minutes as it defeated Emory & Henry College (0-2) by a 5-0 score on Saturday afternoon in the Maryville College Invitational.

The Lions, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2013, are the favorites to win the USA South Athletic Conference Championship again in 2014.

Piedmont got on the board with a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes of the match. Savannah Castles scored first goal at the 9:15 mark while Kalyn Dumanowsky made it 2-0 in favor of the Lions in the 12th minute. Shayna Rogers was credited with the assist on both scores as PC went into the break with the two-goal advantage.

Just 2:14 into the second half, Rogers served up a corner kick that found the head of Kelsey Schaffernoth to give the Lions a 3-0 lead. Rogers added a goal of her own in the 57th minute when she bent a corner kick into the net. The Lions got their final score of the game with 8:45 left on the clock on a finish by Dumanowsky from Tori Gillett.

The Wasps had 12 shots in the match with six coming on frame. Senior forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) and freshman midfielder Christina Ameen (Sweetwater, Tenn.) had two shots on goal each. Sophomore Vicki Fenley (Chesapeake, Va.) and freshman Kayla Wright (Franklin County, Va.) shared the goalkeeping duties, making three saves each.

Piedmont held an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks, but saw its attack halted four times for offside calls. The Lions put 11 of their 17 shots on goal in the victory.

Emory & Henry will have another away match Tuesday to conclude its season-opening road trip. The Wasps will travel to Bluefield, Virginia to face off against the Bluefield College Lady Rams at 7:00 p.m.
