Ferrum Women’s Soccer Slips Past Emory & Henry, 1-0, In Double Overtime Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – The Ferrum College Women's Soccer Team (2-2) scored the lone goal of the match in the 104th minute to defeat Emory & Henry College (1-4) Wednesday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium.

The Panthers threatened to score midway through the first half, putting four shots up in the span of 13 seconds. Emory & Henry freshman goalkeeper Kayla Wright (Franklin County, Va.) remained poised between the pipes, safely turning away Ferrum's barrage.

Emory & Henry had an opportunity on a free kick at the 29:30 mark of the first half, but junior defender Maria Byrd's (Weber City, Va.) strike went into the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper. The Wasps held a 7-4 shot advantage in the first half, with all of the Panthers' opportunities coming in the 28th minute.

In the second half, E&H had a pair of chances just after the hour mark but could not slip them past the keeper. An offside flag in the 89th minute put a stop to an otherwise fantastic run that could have given E&H an opportunity to win in regulation. The Wasps earned a corner kick in the final moments but sophomore defender Willow Hubbard's (Asheville, N.C.) header went just wide, and the score remained 0-0.

The first overtime saw both team with opportunities to take the match, with E&H coming close again on a corner kick.

Ferrum struck in the 104th minute when Bri Carel passed a ball ahead after a cleared corner kick. It found the feet of Morgan Funck, who shot it over the keeper and into the net for the sudden-victory win.

Wright finished the match with five saves for Emory & Henry while Ferrum's Caitlyn Deaton made three stops in the shutout win. The Wasps held a 13-9 shot advantage and led by a 5-3 margin on corner kicks.

Emory & Henry will remain at home on Saturday when it opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play against Virginia Wesleyan. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m., and will be followed by the E&H men.
