Guilford Women’s Soccer Outlasts Emory & Henry, 3-2, Wednesday Evening

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College Women's Soccer Team (2-14-1, 2-8 ODAC) overcame a 2-0 second half deficit to earn a 3-2 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (3-12, 2-8 ODAC) Wednesday evening at the Armfield Athletic Center.

Emory & Henry got on the board just 2:09 into the match. Senior forward Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C.) collected a loose ball inside the box and put it past the keeper to give the Wasps a 1-0 lead.

The contest would remain 1-0 in favor of E&H though the end of the first half. The Wasps made it 2-0 late in the 53rdd minute when sophomore midfielder Sam Sampson (Salem, Va.) recovered her own blocked shot and converted on the second effort.

Guilford closed the gap to 2-1 five minutes later when Cassie Vaughn served in a ball from the right side for Morgan Henderson, who placed it in the back of the net. The Quakers equalized in the 63rd minute. Nicki Baggett took a pass up the middle from Becca Valchar and had a breakaway for the 2-2 tie.

With just 3:07 to go in the match, GC took a 3-2 lead on an own goal after a failed clearance by the Emory & Henry defense on a loose ball inside the six-yard box.

The Wasps had a chance in the 88th minute to level the score at three, but Myer's shot was stopped by the Quakers' goalkeeper.

Emory & henry held an 8-5 advantage on shots but Guilford led in corner kicks, 4-2. The Wasps' back line forced the Quakers into an offside position on eight different occasions in the match.

GC's Caitlyn Young picked up the win in goal, making three saves while E&H sophomore Vicki Fenley (Chesapeake, Va.) stopped one shot despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will return to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match at Fred Selfe Stadium. The contest will conclude the Homecoming festivities for the Wasps and is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m., kickoff.
