Marymount Women’s Soccer Slips Past Emory & Henry, 2-1, Friday In Blackham Classic

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Marymount University Women's Soccer Team (2-0) scored the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute to earn a 2-1 victory over Emory & Henry College (0-1-1) Friday evening in the Blackham Classic, hosted by Southern Virginia University.

The Saints got the scoring started midway through the 24th minute on a strike from Kirsten Campbell.

Emory & Henry answered just seven minutes later (31:35) when junior midfielder Sam Sampson (Salem, Va.) collected a deflection and slotted it past the goalkeeper for a 1-1 score. The goal was the first of the season for the Wasps, who battled for 110 minutes to a scoreless draw on Tuesday.

Coming out of the half with the score still tied 1-1, Marymount took the lead back when Chloe McAuliffe found the back of the net at the 52:37 mark. The score would be enough for the Saints to hold off the Wasps for the final 2-1 margin.

Marymount held just an 8-7 advantage on shots, but was able to put four attempts on frame, compared to just one for E&H. The Wasps had six chances for corner kicks including four in the final 45 minutes, but were unable to add to their score.

Emory & Henry will complete play in the Blackham Classic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., when it squares off against the host Knights of Southern Virginia.
