Southern Virginia Women’s Soccer Edges Emory & Henry, 1-0, Saturday Night

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer Team (1-2) scored the only goal of the match in the 50th minute and held on for the 1-0 victory over visiting Emory & Henry College (0-2-1) Saturday night in the final game of the Blackham Classic.

The two teams battled for the first 45 minutes for a scoreless first half. The two teams were tied in total shots, 5-5, while SVU had a pair of shots on goal while E&H managed one shot on frame.

After the break, Southern Virginia got on the board on an unassisted goal by Tatiana Monsen at the 49:44 mark.

The Wasps put the Knights' goalkeeper to the test in the second 45 minutes, as four of their seven shots were on goal. In the final 10 minutes, E&H had what may have been their best two opportunities of the night to equalize, but SVU's defense held up to preserve the 1-0 lead and earn the win.

Savannah Uri picked up the clean sheet, stopped five shots for Southern Virginia while Emory & Henry sophomore Kayla Wright (Franklin County, Va.) had a save of her own.

Wasp senior forward Emily Belanger (Tampa, Fla.) notched three shots, including two on goal while sophomore midfielder Christina Ameen (Sweetwater, Tenn.) added four shots.

Monsen finished the game with a match-high five shots, including all three of the Knights' attempts on goal.

Emory & Henry outshot Southern Virginia 12-8, including a 5-3 margin in shots on goal. The Knights held a 4-3 margin on corner kicks while the Wasps led in offsides drawn, 2-1.

E&H will be back in action on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., when it travels to face Ferrum College in non-conference action.
