Guilford Women’s Soccer Stuns Emory & Henry, 3-2, Tuesday At Fred Selfe Stadium

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Women's Soccer Team (4-6-1, 2-3 ODAC) scored a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of play to rally for a 3-2 win over Emory & Henry College (2-7-2, 0-3-1 ODAC) Tuesday evening at Fred Selfe Stadium.

The Quakers got on the board at the 5:26 mark of the game when Juliana Evans-Anfom crossed a ball in from the right side of the field. The pass found Kelli Uresti at the top of the box, who one-timed it to the top right corner.

Emory & Henry answered late in the 11th minute after winning a corner kick. With senior midfielder Emily Belanger (Tampa, Fla.) at the corner flag the Wasps made their break toward the goal. Belanger's service was perfect and curled inside the top 90 of the back post without touching another player, tying the contest at a goal apiece.

The final 15 minutes of the first half was all E&H as the Wasps tallied seven shots including five on goal, but the score at the intermission would remain knotted, 1-1.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Emory & Henry broke through for a 2-1 lead. Senior midfielder Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) dribbled through the defense on the right-hand side of the 18-yard box and drew the goalkeeper off of her line. Vaughn got to the end line and with the Quakers' keeper still out of position hit a sharp-angled strike into the back of the net.

The next 20 minutes saw play flow back-and-forth until midway through the 75th minute. Evans-Anfom collected her second assist of the contest, centering a ball to the feet of Christian Heggie, who one-timed it to the near side for the 2-2 score.

Just four and a half minutes later (79:46), the Quakers struck again to go up 3-2. Standing at the corner of the six-yard box, Heggie received a pass from Morgan Sleeth, faced up her defender and banged it across the goal line for her second score of the night.

Neither team was able to sustain possession in the final 10 minutes of play but Guilford successfully fended off Emory & Henry's attacks to come away with the 3-2 upset victory.

Cheyenne Grimm earned the win for the Quakers, making five saves in 90 minutes in goal while Wasp sophomore Kayla Wright (Franklin County, Va.) stopped four shots despite the loss.

E&H held a 19-11 advantage on shots in the game including a 9-7 margin on shots on goal. The Quakers took six corner kicks to just two for the Wasps, but Guilford struggled with its accuracy on free kicks all evening. GC was also called offside on two different occasions during the first half.

Emory & Henry will return to action on Sunday when it faces Virginia Wesleyan College in ODAC action The match, which is a makeup from last Saturday, will take place on the campus of Hollins University in Roanoke. A time for kickoff has not yet been determined.
