Virginia Wesleyan Women’s Soccer Defeats Emory & Henry, 2-0, Sunday In ODAC Action

ROANOKE, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College Women's Soccer Team (8-6, 6-0 ODAC) remained on top of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings with a 2-0 win over Emory & Henry College (2-8-2, 0-4-1 ODAC) Sunday afternoon on the campus of Hollins University.

The match was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, October 3 in Virginia Beach, but last weekend's major weather event caused the contest to be postponed and the location changed due to travel concerns.

It is the second-straight time that the Wasps and Marlins have fought to a 2-0 result, breaking a seven-match string of VWC scoring five or more goals against E&H.

In the opening 20 minutes, the two teams went back and forth establishing the flow of the game. Both squads had chances in the early part of the contest but the back lines held strong.

VWC got on the board in the 24th minute as Madison Sanders took a shot from the right side of the attacking third, curling the ball inside the back post.

The Marlins doubled their lead 16 minutes later on a pass ahead by Allie Ketzler to Miranda Rupp. Rupp then struck the ball over the head of the goalkeeper, making the score 2-0 at the 40:21 mark.

The final 50 minutes of the game would remain scoreless.  Virginia Wesleyan had multiple chances to add to their lead, each of which were turned away by the Emory & Henry defense or adeptly saved by sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Wright (Franklin County, Va.).

Wright finished the game with a career-high 16 saves, stopping 13 shots in the final 45 minutes alone.

VWC held a 28-3 lead on shots and a 6-1 margin on corner kicks in the match. Megan Gerhart earned the shutout win for the Marlins, making two saves.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Wednesday for an ODAC match against Roanoke College at 7:00 p.m.
